About ENSP

Environmental Science and Policy (ENSP) is a unique, multi-disciplinary, undergraduate major that draws courses and faculty from 20 departments and four Colleges. ENSP students develop a broad understanding of environmental problems in a multi-disciplinary lower level "core" and in-depth knowledge and skills within an upper-level "concentration." Research, internship, and study abroad experiences are strongly encouraged in ENSP because they allow students to apply "in the real world" what they are learning in the classroom and to understand more fully the complexities of environmental issues. The areas of concentration in ENSP are:

New ENSP students begin in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, where they are guided through an exploratory advising process. When they choose their concentration at 40 credits (usually during their third semester), they move administratively to the College and department sponsoring the concentration and are advised by a faculty member in their discipline. The ENSP faculty and staff aspire to provide a strong ENSP identity and a "liberal arts feel" for the 300+ students enrolled in this major, while encouraging them to take advantage of the resources available at a Doctoral/Research University. By combining a strong academic program with research and internship experiences, ENSP graduates are prepared for entry-level positions in environmental consulting firms, non-profit organizations, and state and federal agencies; or for post-graduate study.

Some of the entry-level positions common among ENSP alumni include:

  • Environmental scientist - engineering and environmental services firms
  • Policy analyst - non-profit organizations
  • Program analyst - federal agencies (policy-oriented)
  • Research/technical assistant - federal agencies (science-oriented)
  • Peace Corps volunteer
  • Environmental/outdoor educator
